If you’re planning a City Hall wedding in San Francisco, it helps to know this up front: it doesn’t have to be complicated to be unforgettable.
J & J’s wedding at San Francisco City Hall showed how small, intentional moments can hold just as much meaning as any big celebration. They brought a tight-knit group of family and friends, arrived together, and let the day unfold naturally. No stress. No spectacle. Just love, plain and simple.
San Francisco City Hall is one of the most iconic places to get married in the Bay Area. The building has an elegance that instantly adds weight to even the simplest ceremony. Natural light filters in from every direction. The grand staircase, marble floors, and high ceilings all feel cinematic without being overwhelming.
For couples planning a small wedding or elopement, it strikes a rare balance: accessible and affordable, but still beautiful.
J & J chose the standard civil ceremony through the City Hall Clerk’s Office. Most often, these take place in the Rotunda at the top of the grand staircase. The ceremony is short and simple. There isn’t time for personalized vows, but couples do exchange rings, and the officiant makes it official with a brief, heartfelt script.
Even with its brevity, the space and the people in it make the moment feel personal. The scale of the Rotunda and the quiet focus of the ceremony create something intimate, even on a busy day.
They kept their priorities clear. The ceremony was meaningful without being overdone. Afterward, we explored the building for portraits that felt relaxed and real.
It was a crowded day. Tourists, other weddings, and lots of movement filled the space. But that’s normal for San Francisco City Hall. All it takes is some patience, flexibility, and a photographer who knows how to work around it. With the right timing and a bit of creative problem-solving, you can still find calm moments, clean backdrops, and beautiful light.
Near the end of our time together, we made two of the most iconic San Francisco City Hall wedding photos. First, the elevator shot. J & J stepping into one of the vintage elevators, sharing a quick, quiet moment as the doors began to close. Then came the grand exit. Outside on the front steps, their family and friends were waiting with cheers, hugs, and full hearts. That energy doesn’t need much direction. It just needs to be documented honestly.
If you’re planning a similar day, here are a few tips to keep in mind:
J & J’s San Francisco City Hall wedding was simple, heartfelt, and full of life. Small weddings like this remind me that the best stories aren’t always the loudest. They’re the ones built on honesty, love, and being fully present.
If you’re planning something similar, I’d be honored to help capture it with care.
